The Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher(1898-1972) used transformational geometry to create intriguing works of art. He took up art in 1919, and became famous in the 1940's and 1950's for his novel tessellations of the plane and realistic depictions of impossible scenes.
A tessellation (or tiling) is a repeating pattern of figures that completely covers a plane without gaps or overlaps.
